From Allendale to county seat
The settlement was first called Allendale, after Major J. H. Allen, who ran the first cargo steamboat on the Kissimmee River, and took the name Kissimmee when it incorporated. Hamilton Disston's drainage operation, covering about four million acres, drove its early growth. Today it's Osceola County's largest city and county seat, on the northwest shore of Lake Tohopekaliga. Tourism replaced cattle ranching as the main economy after Walt Disney World opened nearby in 1971.
